EA to GD1’s Co-Managing Partners
With big brand experience behind her name, including IAG and Cricket Australia, a knack for both organisation and simplification and an ability to predict and mitigate sticky situations, meet Fiona…
Why venture capital?
“Venture capital is hugely compelling because it plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of business and technology through funding innovative startups who will go on to shape the future. It’s how we power up change! In terms of a career - the industry is dynamic and stimulating, offering the opportunity to work with diverse investors, founders and teams. It’s a recipe for keeping anyone engaged!”
More importantly, why GD1?
“You never only work ‘for a company’; it’s always ‘with a team’. My interviews with GD1’s team were what attracted me to the role. We had great rapport and when that happens, you just know it will be easy to do awesome things together.”
What do you do at GD1, 9-5?
“In a nutshell, it’s my job to ask how I can make the Co-Managing Partners’ day easier so that I free them up to focus on the ‘big stuff’ and the fund’s multiple stakeholders. This involves managing complex schedules and coordinating multiple moving parts. It requires using every ounce of your problem solving skills to anticipate ‘what’s next’ and take care of it so that they can focus on strategic decisions; not logistics.”
What makes a good EA?
“Organisational skills are key because you are always managing multiple tasks and priorities. Communication skills are also vital because this type of role is a reflection of the overall culture at any business. In addition, because circumstances can change quickly, an ability to predict curve balls and adapt without breaking a sweat so that the Co-Managing Partners know it’s always ‘100% covered’ is key. This takes a positive attitude, commitment to continuous improvement and a superhuman ability to remain composed even when things get hairy.”
What’s your superpower?
“I have been called an organisational queen in the past! The juggle inherent in an EA role is real and an ability to multitask while not letting any balls drop is essential.”
What gets you up in the morning?
“Besides my kids, I often enjoy a good pilates session at 6am. Work-wise, it’s not knowing what will happen that day or what I’ll learn that I love. The new and the challenging inherent in every day excites me…”
If you won the lotto, what would you do?
“I would pay off the mortgage; travel to see family and create moments for memory-making (like a beach house!) - all things I try to prioritise even now.”
What would you say to someone wanting a career in venture capital?
“Contrary to common belief, working in a venture capital firm doesn't require a traditional financial background. There are various other routes to success; but what you do need to have is passion, curiosity and resilience. It’s a dynamic and fast-paced environment that is both exciting and rewarding, with significant opportunities for growth like no other industry…”
